Bucky Covington debuts new video for 'Drinking Side of Country' featuring Kellie Pickler and Shooter Jennings (from the mailbag)

BUCKY COVINGTON and SHOOTER JENNINGS have teamed up with MAXIM.COM for the world-premiere of their music video, “Drinking Side Of Country.” The neo-outlaw action clip, which depicts Bucky and Shooter stirring up trouble in a tiny town, can now be viewed exclusively at MAXIM.com, direct link HERE.

Directed by Blake Judd, the raucous music video was shot in Greensburg, KY earlier this month in the midst of a record-setting heat wave in the region. Friends Kellie Pickler, X Games medalist Kenny Bartram and TNA Impact Knockout wrestler Mickie James make cameo appearances as they help Bucky and Shooter evade the law and celebrate over a cold beer.

“Drinking Side Of Country,” written by Bucky and twin brother Rocky along with Ducky Medlock, can be found on Covington’s highly anticipated sophomore album Good Guys, set to release September 11, 2012. The music video can be viewed at TV and online outlets in the coming days.

CD review: Shooter Jennings - "Black Ribbons"

6a00e552403d2f88330120a90b049e970b-320wi

Gab reviewer, Jacob, took a listen to Shooter Jennings' (http://www.shooterjennings.com) psychedelic concept album "Black Ribbons."

Every day, what is or isn't country music gets a little grayer. Over time all of the influences of all of the various artists in the genre have diluted it to the point where it's almost lost for an identity. However, there is no umbrella big enough for Shooter Jennings' new album. "Black Ribbons", to hide under and still be considered country. While his previous albums have been a tasteful mix of Southern Rock and Country, his new effort has his youth of the 80's shining through. Somewhere between Pink Floyd and the soundtrack for a movie about Ruby Ridge, "Black Ribbons" makes an effort to show Shooter's weird side.

From the first electronic keyboard strokes and quoting of Robert Frost (the meaning of that 'good neighbor' quote finally not alluding someone here) of 'Wake Up!' it's obvious that this isn't any album. Here, Shooter teamed up with author Stephen King to make an opus of a concept album about the last night of free airwaves, in the form of Kings dialog, read as the personality behind Last Light Radio, and the music of a band named Hierophant. Exploring the idea of government censorship and The New World order, we're hearing a musical protest to our rights being stripped away by a perceived out of control government.

With subject matter such as this, with a consistent theme, it can be a little hard to keep focus on what's happening at 20 tracks, but one of the highlights is 'Triskadekaphobia' (the fear of 13). A song about the Jack, Queen, and King of hearts(JFK, Princess Di, and Martin Luther King Jr., respectively) leaves behind a lot of the random noise that weighs the album down and just tells us a story, unlike it's successor "Don't Feed The Animals' that's so slurred and busy with random noise, after multiple listens, I'm still not sure what he's talking about.

In all honesty, there's so much going on in most of these tracks, it's pretty difficult to decipher what's happening from track to track, but that may be the point. This isn't a bunch of songs compiled together, this is an album from start to finish, not meant to be taken apart and casually listened to, but taken in as a whole. It's nothing if not a well thought out and executed concept. From the packaging in a thin cardboard sleeve, the cover that utilizes a lot of Illuminati (mostly known from the "Angels and Demons" book and movie) imagery, to the inside flap with a picture of a suited man wearing a sheep masking singing "Row Row Row Your Boar" to a little girl, Shooter has put to rest any arguments that he hasn't left his country roots behind, as his management staff warned in 2009. So, if you're looking for the next country album from the legendary Waylon's son, perhaps you should move on. However, if you're into a lot of electronics, blaring distorted guitars, or paranoid conspiracy theories for that matter, this is probably the album for you.

Win a Shooter Jennings "Black Ribbons" CD

Black ribbons

For those of you who want something that's not country but from the son of country music bad-ass legend and music that comes with a parental advisory, then this one's for you.

Shooter Jennings' new album's been described as experimental, edgy, his best yet, and even psychedelic, so you know it's going to be something different than his previous releases.  And he got help from Stephen King, need I say more?

It's unique enough that Shooter's even turning the album into a video game.  Interesting.

This isn't in any way a country album, but I know we have some Shooter Jennings fans in da house so if you'd like to win a copy  plus a couple of cool post cards to warp your mind with, then email me at shannon@nashvillegab.com and let me know you'd like to be entered.  I've got two copies, contest ends Monday, March 15th.

Buy your copy of "Black Ribbons" here.

Shooter gets engaged and his bride-to-be isn't too happy

Drea-shooter-278x400

First comes love, then comes baby, then comes a wedding in horse-drawn carriage.

Or something like that.

Shooter Jennings and Drea de Matteo have been dating since 2001 and had their daughter, Alabama Gypsyrose, in November of 2007.  Well now they've decided to cap it all off with a wedding.

And it's a good thing that Drea said yes to the proposal because Shooter decided to pop the question in front of a few thousand fans at his Thursday night concert in Utica, N.Y.

According to People.com, "[Drea] was dancing on the side of the stage holding [the couple's 18-month-old daughter] Alabama when [Shooter] called her on stage," a source says. "She was so surprised by the proposal."

Shooter announced the engagement in a completely 2009 sort of way, he Twittered it.  "Asked drea to marry me on stage tonight. I'm a lucky man. I'll never forget Utica, Ny. Hands off motherf***ers she said yes but she's mad."

Guess that means he better get one really big wedding ring then.

Shooter Jennings gives us a little Magick of the Black variety

Shooter_BADmgk_covRGB

Shooter Jennings is releasing a greatest hits album. Here's the press release I received. I'll be reviewing the album shortly so keep an eye open for that.

BAD MAGICK: THE BEST OF SHOOTER

JENNINGS

& THE .357′S

“Best Of” Compilation Features 13 Fan Favorites and Two New Tracks Never Before Released on CD

On Tuesday, March 24 Universal Records South will release Bad Magick: The Best of Shooter Jennings and the .357’s, an all encompassing listening experience of 13 fan favorites from Shooter Jennings’ last four albums, plus two tracks never before released on CD.

Bad Magick is an album for all Shooter fans, whether this is their first album or whether they’ve been with him from his beginnings.  Ten of the album’s tracks were written or co-written by the singer.  The collection offers a little bit of everything and represents what his music is all about

Born the son of a country outlaw, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter gravitated towards the rock n’ roll music scene at an early age, but after his father’s death realized the legendary Jennings had never heard him sing a country song apart from one home recording session at a young age.  Shooter moved to

Music

City

three years later with his band, the .357’s. Together, in just a few short years, they released four country albums with a signature rock flare that drew an immediate fan base of all ages.

Combining a blend of country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, Shooter Jennings has developed his own unique style of music, not shadowing in his famous father’s footsteps.

“I sound like myself,” explains Shooter. “I guess that comes from finally doing what I want, even though I’m embracing my heritage, too.  That’s important in country music.”

In his five years as a country music artist, Shooter has had much success similar to those who have worked decades to achieve.  From performing in the small club scene to playing for thousands at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Stagecoach, he has also made the late night talk show rounds with performances on the Late Show with David Lettermen, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and Last Call with Carson Daly.

In conjunction with the release of the album, fans can catch Shooter’s collaboration with Jamey Johnson on CMT Crossroads which premieres March 23 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.  He will also be hitting the road in late spring for an extensive tour hitting many of the top markets across the

Listen to new Waylon Jennings

Waylon

Waylon may be gone but his music still lives on, and thanks to his son, Shooter, we now have a new album to enjoy.

Waylon Forever, is a collaboration between Waylon and his son started before the elder Jenning's death and finished after he died back in 2002.  It wont be out until October 21, but thanks to CMT you can listen to one of the updated songs, Lonesome, On'ry and Mean.  It's distinctly Waylon.  Take a listen here or read CMT's post about the album here.
