Marty Stuart has a day, gets a road marker

Marty

Philadelphia loves Marty Stuart - so much so that he has his own day, July 9th.

This year Marty will be at the Marty Stuart Day celebration for a full day of activities which will include a museum exhibit and road marker dedication.  He'll also perform at the Choctaw Indian Fair.

Marty's wife, Connie Smith, will also be on hand and will perform at the Choctaw Indian Fair as well.

The road marker will designate Marty Stuart Drive off Mississippi 19 north near land Stuart owns. The museum exhibit will feature items that Marty owned including things from his childhood in Philadelphia.

If you'd like to attend, all events are open to the public. Marty will be at the dedication at 10 a.m. and will be at the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Historical Museum at noon. He'll then perform that evening at the fair at 8:30 p.m.

Marty Stuart has a book

Marty stuart book

Marty Stuart has written a picture, autograph, history book for country music.  From everything I've read, it sounds like his love letter to country music.  I'm surprised I haven't heard about Marty's book yet since it came out this month.  There is a great article about it here.

From Amazon's website:

When Marty Stuart first entered the Hard Rock Cafe, he was impressed to see the work of rock preservationists, yet realized that the artifacts of country music were being lost or destroyed. He set out to change that, becoming a leading curator of roots music memorabilia and photographer of roots founders.

After years of careful preservation, Stuart brings the early days of country to vibrant life again with Country Music: The Masters. In a unique pairing, completely original for a photography book of this scope, an integrated audio CD is included featuring 60 minutes of the fascinating stories behind selected photos. Stuart, a born storyteller, gives readers a glimpse into the subjects and the photograph at the moment the shutter snapped. The CD includes "Dark Bird," an unreleased song dedicated to Johnny Cash, written by Stuart after Cash's death. This new recording marks the first-ever commercial release of the song.

"A photograph can just be a piece of paper with an image on it... But when the observer with his finger on the button has the life experience it takes to understand the life he's shooting, the photograph is a story. Marty"s photographs live and breathe. If it's a person, you can hear their thoughts, feel their pain or joy, and read at least a part of their story. If it's a building or a landscape, you can feel the presence of those who have walked there or lived there through the years."
- Billy Bob Thornton

The video below is a look at the making of the book.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomes country man

Martystuart_bestofopry06_e

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is going to be going a little bit country in the coming months.  Starting October 30 they will have an exhibit called Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart's American Musical Odyssey which will feature a collection of artifacts from classic musicians of the last four decades.  The HOF website says:

Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart’s American Musical Odyssey is an astounding array of performance costumes, accessories, handwritten lyrics, personal letters and instruments, collected by country music artist Marty Stuart. The collection represents 40 years of the classic musical greats behind country, rockabilly, bluegrass and southern gospel. Amazingly, Stuart obtained some of the best pieces in his collection from Nashville thrift stores. Sparkle & Twang shares the dual story behind the legendary music personas, as well as the significance behind preserving the culture that represents America’s musical past.

More than 300 artifacts are featured in this exhibit including:

  • Elvis Presley’s sweater worn in a photograph with Junior Parker
  • Hank Williams Sr.’s handwritten lyrics for “Cold, Cold Heart” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart”
  • Patsy Cline’s performance outfit and the last pair of boots that she wore
  • Johnny Cash’s handwritten lyrics for “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Man in Black”

"This is a very vibrant exhibit, full of historic costumes, instruments and lyrics," said Jim Henke, vice president of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "It offers a colorful look back at one of the roots of rock and roll and includes key artifacts from some Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees."

The show will run from 10/30/2008 to 3/1/2009.  You can visit the HOF website here.

Marty Stuart and Keith Urban perform together

Marty and Keith perform "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" on Opry Live.

Sorry all you Keith fans but I think Marty Stuart totally sang Keith under the table.  They're both awesome, though, so I guess it's okay.

Note:  Okay, so three emails and one comment later I will admit that Marty didn't really sing Keith under the table, but I do prefer Marty's voice.  That better?  You guys are great when you get riled up.

Speaking of Marty and Keith, they made People today.  People talks about Keith helping Marty celebrate his 50th birthday.  You can read the article here.
