Country star Trace Adkins has been cast in Lionsgate's "Tough Trade," the first original series pilot for EPIX,™ the new multi-platform entertainment service from Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) which launched October 30, 2009.
In the series, Adkins will portray the character named "Scared," a friend and bodyguard to Linwood Tucker (Sam Shepard), who is fiercely loyal to the Tucker family. He follows his own code of honor and is both respected and feared throughout Nashville.
"Tough Trade" is a provocative, contemporary one-hour drama about a three-generation Nashville music dynasty whose penchant for drink, debauchery and divorce has left them morally corrupt and on the verge of bankruptcy. The family with little left is pinning its hopes on its former black sheep, a budding country star turned alternative rock heart throb. "Tough Trade" brings viewers behind the scenes and into the living room to expose the tragic and sometimes comedic secrets, scandals and sorrows of this unforgettable American family.
With a creative team led by executive producer and show-runner Jenji Kohan ("Weeds"), the pilot for "Tough Trade" was written by creator/co-executive producer Chris Offutt ("True Blood," "Weeds") and will be directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Rendition, Tsotsi). Shooting began this week in Nashville, Tennessee.
Adkins, who is best known for his basement-deep baritone voice and chart-topping hits, has enjoyed a successful career as a performer, musician, author and actor. He has sold more than 10 million albums and performed for millions of fans worldwide. Already a country star, Adkins grabbed the national spotlight as runner-up on NBC's first season of THE CELEBRITY APPRENTICE. Later that year, he appeared as "the Angel of Death" in the film AN AMERICAN CAROL. Most recently, Adkins learned that his latest Top 15 hit, "All I Ask For Anymore" has received two Grammy nominations in the "Best Male Country Vocal Performance" and "Best Country Song" categories.
